Per my previous post, this day was a very scary one from the early morning, but it ended up being one of the most memorable and working out perfectly. The morning started very early, and we headed to the first train we could find to Sibenik. This required a connection in Sadin, which was basically in the middle of nowhere! We hopped on the train and headed that was at 7:30am. With our luck, it turned out that today was the Croatian equivalent of Independence day for their country. With that not being known, we headed on the train but it was the only one running all day! Thus we were stuck about 50 miles away from split knowing we would not be able to get back, and furthermore would not be making our connection as the other lines were not running. With that in mind we hopped off the train at the first stop we could find, and it put us in the small town of Sadin. This was where we hoped to get a bus to take, but we could not find that either, as they were not running!
This is where we were starting to feel scared as there was no more than 100 people in the small town we had been dropped off in, and everything seemed to be closed, except for a coffee shop. We tried every means to get connection with our cell phone but were unable to. Finally after sitting down and having coffee, we headed to the front of the restaurant to ask for help. The hostess gladly called us a taxi, and since that took us all the way to Sibenik, I knew that wold be worth the money, and extra money at that being on a holiday.
The taxi driver was relatively nice, though he did seem surprised, and a tad annoyed that we bothered him to work on such a holy day for the country. Either way, we made it to Sibenik, which is where the main bus lines ran. We were able to buy a separate ticket and head to the main park of Kyka. This is very similar to Plitvice Lakes park, just not as large. There is one massive waterfall with multiple terraces to it. The park itself is only accessible by a ferry which leaves the town of Skradin. The cost of entrance is 24 EU per person and it was worth it as one can actually swim in the waters of this park as opposed to Plitvice Lakes. This was why we brought our swim trunks with us to go in here. With that in mind, the ferry headed under the massive road bridge that entered into the city and headed upstream of the lake and river, and within a mile, lo and behold there is theĀ waterfall.
This waterfall was spectacular, and was an oasis among the landscape unlike any other. This was such a great place to take pictures, hangout, swim, and enjoy the outdoors.
The terraces had pathways and bridges around the river multiple times. This allowed one to walk across the river, ascend the hills, and cross the river again at the top terraces. There were fish and other species within the waters, and every turn had a unique view and waterfall terrace to it. After swimming for a bit, we decided to walk the whole loop, where you can find multiple other waterfalls hidden within the trees on the hills.
This was a great way to spend the afternoon, and after the mornings transportation debacle, we felt satisfied with the efforts and we decided it was time to head back home to Split. We decided to get some ice cream before we reached the bus stop again, and thank goodness we made it on the bus, because it was the last one of the day!
Further more this worked out great because from Sibenik, it would take us all the way back to the Split bus station, which was a great relief not having to find train routes back. We made it back to the town of Split and had dinner via grocery and pizza parlors. We decided to once again stay in since the city itself was a little dangerous at night, and rest up for the early morning ahead. Upon getting to the hotel we came across this wonderful firework exhibit celebrating their day of independence. This was the perfect way to end a crazy busy day but we were happy with the result!
